The witch trials were at their peak in England when, in June , Gwen Ellis, a woman in her early forties who had been married three times, was taken to Flint gaol on suspicion of witchcraft. She remained there for four months awaiting trial. A journal devoted exclusively to magic and witchcraft, Magic, Ritual, and Witchcraft, commenced publication in , while an internet listserv, Hexenforschung, produces daily postings, mostly in German but with a good number in English. 7 One sign that the field of witchcraft studies has come of age has been the publication of a book devoted.

The book is particularly good on the legal aspects of witchcraft prosecutions. It shows that the Act of was brought in at the behest of James I, and that this made it a felony, for the first time, to conjure spirits. From Halloween superstitions to literary references such as Faust and, of course, Harry Potter, witches seem ever-present in our lives.

We asked Professor Diane Purkiss to take us inside the minds of ordinary people and intellectuals in medieval and early modern England to reveal how the figure of the witch was born.
